My takeaway from the film was the main character’s profound disconnect from the natural world – to the point that he starts to create an imaginary world where he is in a long-term relationship with a woman named Rita.

Rita may be a real person, but the authenticity of his relationship with her is not.

He even saves up enough money (money that he does not have) to pay for her ticket and legal documents.

As the viewer, you watch him scrounge up a few dollars here and there, work long hours, adopt an unhealthy diet, all to support this dream. The audience knows that this will not end well, yet we cannot look away out of pity.
